Antonio Conte didn’t do much right last season, given Chelsea’s poor form in the Premier League, but one thing that worked well was his decision to drop David Luiz. The Brazilian enjoyed a brilliant first season back in London, but within weeks of his second, the Brazilian was beginning to look like his old self – and he was hardly seen again.
However, Maurizio Sarri has brought him back into the fold this time around, and it’s not working out for the club. He’s looked poor so far this season, and in truth, he simply doesn’t look good enough anymore. The Blues want success this term, and their defensive issues could prevent that from happening.
This weekend against Bournemouth, then, it’s time for the Italian to make a change, and fortunately for Chelsea, they have the perfect defender sitting on the bench waiting for his chance.
Andreas Christensen was a regular for the Blues last season, and he looked good whenever he played. Despite being just 22-years-old, he offered a calmness and a coolness that many of his more senior teammates simply don’t have, and as a defender, that’s an invaluable trait.
He’s similar to Luiz in that he’s very comfortable on the ball. He’s got no problems moving out from the defence and finding a cross-field pass, and that served him well in an Antonio Conte system. However, he’d be just as good under Sarri – if not more so. Sarri places a lot of emphasis on quick passing and movement, and that’s why Jorginho has done so well. Christensen, meanwhile, is just as good as the midfielder when it comes to passing, with the Dane rarely losing the ball and still able find his teammates from distance.
He hasn’t had much time in a back-four at Chelsea, and so it will take him some time to adjust, but at this point, he can’t be much worse than Luiz. For Sarri, Luiz’s poor display against Newcastle must be the final straw – and Christensen must come in. The Blues won’t win trophies with such an inconsistent defender at the back.
