Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are glad to have ended the season on a high after lifting the FA Cup but are disappointed with their league performance – many of our punters want Antonio Conte out.
The Italian was an overwhelming success during his first season in England as the Blues cruised to the Premier League title. However, things have not gone to plan during his second year in the Premier League as Chelsea could only manage a fifth-place finish in the Premier League meaning they will miss out on Champions League football.
Conte’s future has been plunged into doubt with speculation continuing that outgoing Napoli manager, Maurizio Sarri, could be set to replace him. Whether it’s Conte or Sarri, addressing Chelsea’s forwards will be a priority this summer with Alvaro Morata failing to hit the ground running following his move from Real Madrid.
Olivier Giroud seems set for a role as a super sub again; a new forward will be needed. One option could be Juventus forward – Mario Mandzukic. The Croatian is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt but has netted just five Serie A goals after falling behind Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuaín in the pecking order. The majority of his performances have come from left-wing highlighting the versatility he would offer at Stamford Bridge.
The Premier League is the only league in Europe’s top four that the 32-year-old hasn’t featured in after playing for Atletico Madrid as well as Bayern Munich. Chelsea could offer him a new challenge and a more prominent role in the squad.
