Sarri would finally replace Matic if he joined Chelsea and landed £36m-rated midfield lynchpin

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern will be glad they could end the season with a trophy after lifting the FA Cup but are still disappointed – our punters know there is a massive summer ahead.

Their cup triumph is only a consolation for the Blues following a dreadful season. Champions last year, they finished 23 points worse off this season and were 30 behind the eventual winners Manchester City. To add insult to injury, finishing fifth means they will miss out on Champions League football next year.

The failures have plunged Antonio Conte’s future at the club into doubt, with ex-Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri lined up as his replacement. Sarri masterminded Napoli’s title challenge this season and could bring a few of his star players to Stamford Bridge, including defensive midfielder – Jorginho.

The Italian has been one of the Serie A’s best players this season and would be a massive signing for the Blues. Replacing Nemanja Matic with Tiemoue Bakayoko failed miserably – Jorginho would be a much better option. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, he made 33 appearances in the Serie A last year.

Compared to Bakayoko, Jorginho has made more interceptions per game (1.9) according to WhoScored. As a more natural centre midfielder, the 26-year-old boasts better offensive stats, completing more through balls, long balls and key passes per game than the Frenchman.

Losing Matic was a major blow to Chelsea and perhaps Conte’s greatest mistake as the club’s boss. In Jorginho, the Blues wouldn’t only have replaced their former stoic Serb, but upgraded on him.

A deep-lying playmaker alongside N’Golo Kante would give the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian the freedom to attack and hurt defences like in the 16/17 season and return Chelsea to their former glories.

Chelsea fans, thoughts?
