The Sun are claiming that Chelsea have given up on signing France international Franck Ribery and will instead make a £25 million move for his Bayern Munich team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. Ribery has apparently told the Blues that he will join Real Madrid in the summer which has forced Carlo Ancelotti’s side to change their focus to elsewhere and they haven’t strafed far, moving on to versatile Schweinsteiger.
The 25-year-old German international is comfortable anywhere in midfield and also is a set piece specialist who would add attacking flair to the team and is seen by Ancelotti as a long term replacement for the ageing Michael Ballack.
Schweinsteiger came through the ranks at Bayern as a teenager and has made well over 200 appearances for the club which would make it seem unlikely that he would be willing to leave. But the latest reports claim that Schweinsteiger would be interested in a new challenge and sees the Premiership as the most appealing option which will certainly give Chelsea hope.
The suspension of Chelsea’s transfer ban has led to Ancelotti looking to strengthen as much as he can in the coming transfer window despite claiming he would make no signings and Ribery was said to be top of the list. His decision to go elsewhere will simply make Chelsea switch targets and they could end spending a lot of money in January if, as expected, they move for Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero as well as the possibility of Schweinsteiger.
