Here at the Football Transfer Tavern we are putting down our pints and are taking a bit of a step back at the news that Everton boss David Moyes has stalled on his contract renewal talks – according to the Daily Telegraph.
Of course the manager has been linked with the job at Old Trafford but has more recently been linked with the Chelsea job. The manager is said to have placed himself firmly on the hit list of Roman Abramovich after not only proving himself at Everton but showing he is more thn capable of buying players of the highest quality at the lowest prices.
Chelsea are currently under the stewardship of Rafael Benitez who is less than popular at Stamford Bridge and it has become more and more evident that Benitez will only last until the end of the season – at the very most. Cue a very Chelsea-like search for a new manager and links with former manager and the Special One, Jose Mourinho.
However, as our landlord points out, Mourinho is loose cannon and could go anywhere, not to mention is turbulent past with Abramovich. As we all know, the Blues tried to land Pep Guardiola as reported by the Daily Mail previously but now are looking for other options and David Moyes is one of those in the frame after proving time and time again exactly how skilled he is.
With contract negotiations now being placed on hold by Moyes it seems that the door could well be open for Chelsea to pounce. Despite the delay, Moyes sought to play down rumours of a move, claiming that: “I want it to be purely football now until the end of the season. I don’t want anything to get in the way and I would hate to think anything to do with me would. So because of that I’m saying I’ll be looking at it in the summer.”
