It’s been a decent season for Man Utd, but with such huge expectations on the shoulders of Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese boss has a lot of work on his hands this summer to make things even better.
In truth, Man Utd can’t really afford to go another year without putting in a serious challenge for the Premier League title, and so Mourinho needs to improve his squad quite considerably, both in terms of the personnel and the tactics at hand.
Fortunately, in the case of the former, it appears as though Man Utd are already working to that end.
According to the Sun, Manchester United sent a scout to watch Swansea regular Alfie Mawson during their game with West Brom last week, with Jose Mourinho keen to upgrade his defensive options. An offer of over £40 million will reportedly be needed to sign him, which apparently isn’t putting Man Utd off.
The Red Devils have looked good going forward this season, with Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard looking very exciting indeed. However, the same cannot be said of the defence.
Nobody has really covered themselves in glory, and players like Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have had their stock drop even further after yet another poor campaign.
As such, bringing in a new defender this summer makes sense, and as a proven Premier League talent, the prospect of signing Mawson makes sense.
Alfie Mawson isn’t going to make waves and sell shirts quite like someone like Alexis Sanchez, but he’d certainly plug a very important gap for Man Utd.
He’s proven in the Premier League, and so Mourinho will have no worries about just adjustment.
The Englishman won’t be cheap, but the Red Devils have money to burn as they’ve proven in recent years, and so it’s a deal that makes sense.
