Liverpool supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side only muster a 0-0 draw at home to West Brom on Wednesday night, a result which saw them drop out of the Premier League’s top four.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Baggies off the back of conceding a late leveller to draw 1-1 with Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday, yet they would have viewed a home encounter against Alan Pardew’s side as an opportunity to get back to winning ways. However, they were unable to do that as the Midlands outfit produced an impressive rear-guard effort to become just the third team this season, behind the two Manchester clubs, to stop Klopp’s Liverpool from scoring in a Premier League match.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, several of whom are eagerly anticipating their forthcoming January transfer window, in which they hope that their team can bring in the necessary reinforcements for a successful second half of the campaign.
And one man who has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent times is Roma’s Emerson Palmieri, a 23-year-old left-back who was reportedly on the Liverpool wish-list during the summer only for injury to thwart the Reds chances of landing the Brazilian.
Yet the Merseysiders have reportedly retained their interest and recent reports suggest that they could land the full back for just €20 million, in a move which, if they were to land him in January, would surely be money well spent.
And that’s because the defensive department, significantly the left-back area, is a clear weakness for Klopp’s men, and strengthening that looks to be key in their chances of competing for major honours in the years to come.
Ultimately, Alberto Moreno’s poor form last season saw Klopp replace him in the side with midfielder James Milner, and then go out and buy a specialist left-back in Andrew Robertson during the summer.
Yet the latter hasn’t quite got the minutes he would have liked so far this term, while Moreno may have started the season reasonably well, but recent weeks have seen the Spaniard struggle for form to suggest that it remains a weakness in the current starting eleven.
Thus, it’s an area that needs bolstering in January, and given Palmieri’s efforts in Italy in the last few years, he’d be an ideal signing and one that would significantly improve this Liverpool side, and give them the sort of defensive strength down the left flank that they have generally been missing for the last few years.
And at the tender age of 23, time is on his side to become the next long-term left-back at Anfield, and one they can rely on for many a year.
Thus, sealing a deal for the left-back, especially if it is for only €20 million, would be money very well spent by the Merseyside giants in January.
