Sean Longstaff came close to leaving Newcastle on loan this summer

Newcastle United have had the worst possible start to their Premier League campaign this season.

The Magpies are yet to win a match in the competition and currently sit at the bottom of the table alongside Cardiff City on two points from eight games.

Despite their lowly position, Rafa Benitez’s side at times have been playing some great football, however, they have not been able to make the most of the opportunities they have had to get all three points.

It will not have helped that a number of his players have suffered injuries already, whilst suspensions have also been enforced to a squad that clearly lacks depth in certain areas of the field.

And, according to a report by the Newcastle Chronicle, that is the main reason why one man was not allowed to leave St. James’ Park in the summer.

Sean Longstaff was expected to head out on loan to League One outfit Portsmouth, however, Benitez decided to keep him on Tyneside.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated at the club, however, he is yet to be used by the Spaniard this season as he lacks the experienced required to play at the Premier League level.

The Verdict:

Longstaff is obviously highly-rated at Newcastle as they are currently close to locking him down to a new contract.

The 20-year-old is expected to have a bright future ahead of him, however, it appears that his lack of experience is holding him back from being used by Benitez, which could cause him some concern moving forward.

You would have to feel that he would have been better off leaving the club to join Portsmouth on a season-long loan and get some competitive experience under his belt – with a side who are sitting top of League One and looking like real title contenders.
