There are some seriously happy faces here in the Football Transfer Tavern after BBC Sport reported that Everton have finalised the club record £28 million signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.
The former Blues forward has joined the Merseyside club on a five-year deal and has cost Roberto Martinez a record breaking fee.
It is the second cracking piece of news for Toffees fans this week after Ross Barkley signed a new deal with the Goodison Park outfit.
Now as one of our punters notes, Lukaku’s permanent switch is a huge move for Everton and one that really shows how much the club are looking towards the future and aiming to get themselves right up there as true Champions League contenders.
Lukaku was thrilled to be joining the club he spent last season on loan at and took a swipe at Chelsea, their fans and manager Jose Mourinho as he spoke to the press.
The Belgian international claimed: “I’m 21, I need to be playing in a good team. I needed to be in a place that felt right.
“I decided very quickly I wanted to come back. This is the place I belong.”
Now Jose Mourinho may not see things quite in the same light, with the Blues boss claiming Lukaku was unwilling to fight for his place with Diego Costa and Didier Drogba.
However, we think that as a young player, you need to be on that field, not the bench!
Everton fans. Is this the start of your club really showing that they can mix it with the big boys? Let us know your thoughts below.
