With Leighton Baines strongly linked with a move away from Goodison Park, Everton are reportedly lining up Juventus full back Reto Ziegler.
Manchester United and even Napoli are interested in Baines, who went to Euro 2012 as Ashley Cole’s backup in the England squad. With Everton needing money and the 27 year old looking to establish himself as an England regular, there is a fair chance that Baines will be leaving Merseyside this summer.
With United allegedly preparing to pay around £16m for the left back, Everton will be able to reinvest that money into the team, but a replacement for Baines would have to be a top priority, and today’s Metro claims that they have earmarked Switzerland international Reto Ziegler as the man to step into the role.
Juventus signed the former Tottenham full back last summer from relegated Sampdoria, but loaned him straight out to Fenerbahce for the season. He’s now returned to Turin to find he isn’t wanted and a return to England could well be on the cards. Juve supposedly want in the region of £5m but David Moyes is hoping to land his man for £2m.
Ziegler didn’t make much of an impact in England, enduring injury hit spells with Spurs and Wigan – but since moving away, he’s really developed as a player. Defensively he’s questionable, but he’s quick and great going forward, so seems like a very good replacement for Baines.
The gap in valuation is a problem, but it won’t be realised if Baines stays. If Baines does leave, picking up Ziegler for a figure in the region of around £3.5m then it could be great business for Moyes and The Toffees.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
