The Manchester United fans were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern last night after their slim hopes of mounting a late title challenge were firmly crushed by Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Jose Mourinho’s miserable record on Tyneside continued yesterday as his side suffered a 1-0 defeat against the determined Magpies. The Portuguese manager’s winless run at St James’ Park in the Premier League now stands at 7 games after United’s result yesterday, and his latest failure to record victory in the north-east has all but confirmed that Manchester City will finish as champions this season.
The result could have been entirely different on another day as United missed plenty of opportunities to score both before and after Newcastle took the lead. With the score tied at 0-0, Alexis Sanchez had arguably the best chance of the game for United. The Chile international rounded the debutant goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and was left with an empty net, but his needless split-second delay in taking the shot allowed for Florian Lejuene to recover and make a vital block.
Newcastle took the lead shortly afterwards and held on to their one goal advantage until the final-whistle after United missed a handful of guilt-edged chances. Anthony Martial was particularly culpable of missing chances for United, as he twice scuffed a shot from the 6 yards out after the ball fell perfectly into his path following a corner from Juan Mata.
Martial (valued at £58.5 million by Transfermarkt) also missed a one on one opportunity in the first-half, so naturally the French forward is far from The Red Devils fan-favourite after their defeat yesterday.
In the aftermath of proceedings, a handful of United supporters jumped to Martial’s defence and claimed he is unsuited to the role Mourinho deployed him in yesterday.
However, there are plenty of fans who are deeply frustrated by his failure to take his chances, and they have expressed their displeasure in no uncertain terms on Twitter.
Here’s what some of the United fans have had to say about Martial on Twitter…
if you plan to play martial on the right, you might as well just sell him or bench him

Anthony Martial on the right wing is like a child on his third or fourth day of school. He now knows where he's going, but he still doesn't know why.

Would like to see Alexis partner Lukaku up front, or just sit behind him, and allow Martial to go back to left wing. Doesn’t look comfortable on the right.
