Reports in Spain had earlier claimed that Real had beaten off Chelsea amongst other teams to the 18 year old’s signature but Canales has been quoted in Marca as saying,
“Right now my preference is for Racing. They are the ones who have given me the confidence to play and make my debut at 18-years-old. Without ruling out anything, in the situation that I am in, I’m happy here,”
Canales is free to talk to any club he wishes as his contract expires in the summer but despite being ‘somewhat suprised’ by the media attention he has been receiving, he has confirmed he will not be letting it go to his head and also stated that although he is extremely flattered, he still has lots to learn.
Santander will have to keep their wits about them as Real will be stepping up their attempts to capture the youngster, as after he plays 450 minutes this this season his contract is automatically extended by a year.
