Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left worried with the Daily Star reporting that Juventus have set their sights on star defender Nemanja Vidic on a free transfer next summer.
The 31-year-old’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and although he is likely to be offered a one-year extension, the Serie A giants will try to pick up the ex-Serbian international on a free by patiently waiting until the end of the season.
Sources from Italy suggest that Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta and Fabio Paratici are confident they can persuade Vidic to leave the Premier League champions when his contract expires.
Vidic is understood to have held discussion new boss David Moyes about his future, while reiterating that he wants to remains at the club in recent weeks.
He said: “I have respect for the great job David did at Everton. I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Vidic joined United from Spartak Moscow in 2006 and has since formed an outstanding partnership with Rio Ferdinand as Sir Alex Ferguson’s United repeatedly defeated all before them in the Premier League.
As one punter explains, despite his issues with injuries it seems very unlikely that the Red Devils would let the experienced defender leave on a free contract. Vidic remains one of their best defenders with possible replacements Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones not quite matching his quality as yet.
