One young player that has been watched by a number of clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool is Palermo’s young Danish defender Simon Kjaer. At 20 years old, he has a wealth of first team experience in Serie A and is one of the leagues top defenders.
Joining Palermo from Danish side FC Midtjylland in July 2008, he had previously attracted the interest of Middlesbrough and Real Madrid, who apparently tried to sign him after he was awarded 2007 U19 Talent of the Year in Denmark. This request was refused by FC Midtjylland.
It was Sicilian side Palermo with the financial backing of Maurizio Zamparini who managed to prise the young Dane from his homeland, paying a fee of €4 million. After making his first team debut in October 2008, the centre-back has not looked back, becoming an integral part of the Palermo back line.
In addition to his club experience he has recently broken into the Danish national team and will be seen strutting his stuff at the World Cup next year.
Valued at around £12 million and given his age, it would seem Kjaer would be a wise investment for one of the big four Premier League clubs. Sir Alex Ferguson is rumoured to be interested and has had him thoroughly scouted. Chelseas and Liverpool have also thrown their hats into the ring.
He also revealed where his allegiances lie, “it is true that my family and I support Liverpool, but the transfer market has nothing to do with it,” the Dane stated earlier this year.
Considering his strength on the ball, timing of the tackle and reading of the game which are all top quality, it will only be a matter of time before Kjaer moves on. But where? Only time will tell.
