West Ham supporters have been slightly downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side bow out of the Carabao Cup, yet their recent Premier League form gives them cause for optimism ahead of this weekend’s clash with Newcastle United.
David Moyes’ men may well have lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Tuesday night to thus exit the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage, yet their run of two wins and a draw from their last three Premier League matches has seen the Hammers move out of the bottom three. Victories over Chelsea and Stoke City alongside a 0-0 draw with Arsene Wenger’s Gunners last week has increased the positivity around the London Stadium, positivity our resident West Ham fans hope will help guide them to victory over struggling Newcastle in East London on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for those Hammers supporters lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least a recent report from The Guardian which suggests that Moyes holds a ‘serious’ interest in Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson ahead of a likely bid in January.
The 23-year-old centre-back made the move to the Liberty Stadium back in 2016 and has since gone from strength to strength with 48 appearances for the South Wales outfit, including starts in all 18 of their Premier League matches this term to underline his status as one of Swans’ first-choice defenders.
And his fine efforts in the heart of their backline have reportedly attracted the interest of Moyes’ West Ham, who are readying a bid for the Englishman in January in a bid to freshen up their own defence, which until recently was struggling to keep clean sheets.
It may cost the Hammers in excess of £20 million to lure Mawson to the London Stadium, but at the age of 23 and with a bright future ahead of him, it may be a price worth paying in the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Three successive clean sheets in the Premier League has suggested that West Ham have turned a corner under new boss David Moyes, yet the Scot appears to want further reinforcements to his backline in January.
And that’s because reports suggest that the former Everton and Manchester United chief holds a ‘serious’ interest in Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson, who has impressed at the South Wales outfit since breaking into their side at the start of 2017.
And with much of the Hammers backline either approaching 30 or the wrong side of it, landing the 23-year-old makes sense for both the present and the future of the club.
