Tottenham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team go down 4-1 at Premier League leaders Manchester City on Saturday, a result which saw them plunge to seventh in the table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Citizens off the back of successive wins over Stoke City and Brighton, but they were no match for the champions-elect at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening. A brace from Raheem Sterling as well as strikes from Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne secured a comprehensive victory for Pep Guardiola’s side, with a late Christian Eriksen effort nothing more than a mere consolation for the North London outfit, who in turn slipped to seventh in the table following wins for Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as a draw for Burnley at Brighton.
Thus, there have been many despondent Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that Chelsea have joined the race for Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.
The 25-year-old made the move back to Selhurst Park permanently in 2015 after an unsuccessful stint at Manchester United, yet he has since proven his worth to the Eagles with seven goals and 11 assists last term to help them to Premier League safety, while his efforts so far this time round suggest that he’ll again play a key part in their bid to stay up.
Zaha has bagged four goals and laid on one assist for Roy Hodgson’s side, his latest strike coming in their 3-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday, and as such the Ivory Coast international continues to attract the interest of Pochettino’s Spurs.
However, recent reports suggest that their pursuit has gone ‘cold’, and as such Chelsea have reportedly joined the race for the wing wizard in a bid to bolster their ranks ahead of the second half of the season.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen what the future holds for Zaha in 2018.
Landlord’s verdict: Wilfried Zaha endured a torrid time at Manchester United, but has since proven his quality to everyone with several impressive performances for Crystal Palace in the last few years.
The 25-year-old bagged seven goals and laid on 11 assists to help the Eagles avoid relegation last term and he has started this campaign in similar fashion, all of which have reportedly attracted the attention to Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.
Yet, reports suggest that their ‘trail has gone cold’ and as such Chelsea are seeking to beat them to Zaha’s signature, and given that Spurs have reportedly headed the race for a while now, this is sure to come as disappointment to manager Pochettino, who may find the financial power of the Blues difficult to overcome in landing the 25-year-old.
