‘Shame that’, ‘Great assist’ – Southampton fans mock Van Dijk’s efforts against Swansea

Southampton supporters have been a bit more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side produce a spirited display to hold Tottenham to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s on Sunday, although it didn’t end their frustrating winless run in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit having failed to win any of their preceding ten league matches, in which time they picked up just five points to slip into the division’s bottom three. And although they were unable to record a fifth victory of the campaign on Sunday, the Saints produced a much-improved display to draw with Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, with Harry Kane equalising for the visitors after 18 minutes following Davinson Sanchez’s own goal just three minutes earlier.

Thus, there have been some upbeat Southampton fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are hoping that their side can build upon a decent performance on Sunday to climb away from the relegation mire in the coming weeks and months.

In the meantime though, several of our resident Saints supporters have been keeping tabs on the sides around them in the division, and were particularly interested in Swansea City’s 1-0 success over high-flying Liverpool on Monday night, and not just because the Swans are two places below them in the division.

The South Coast outfit sold centre-back Virgil van Dijk to the Merseyside giants for £75 million a few weeks back, but the Netherlands international endured a difficult evening in South Wales, playing a key part in the hosts’ goal by failing to clear the corner, allowing Alfie Mawson to brilliantly fire home.

And many Saints fans took to Twitter both during and after the game to mock the ex-Southampton defender’s tricky night at the Liberty Stadium…
