Ryan Shawcross could be on the verge of a return to Manchester United according to reports by Sky Sports News. Sir Alex Ferguson, who has publically said before that he regrets letting the 25-year-old leave Old Trafford in 2008, could be ready to launch a bid for the Stoke defender.
However United aren’t the only side chasing Shawcross, as both Chelsea and Tottenham have kept tabs on the centre back.
Shawcross, who has been impressive during his four year spell at Stoke, has not indicated that he is willing to sign an extension to his current contract at Stoke, prompting interest from the Premier League giants.
Should the defender choose to leave the Britannia Stadium it is likely that he will opt for a move back to Old Trafford, due to his previous connections to the club, and Ferguson’s admiration for the Stoke skipper.
Over the past year, injuries have highlighted United’s defensive frailties and a centre back is likely to be high on Ferguson’s shopping list come January.
With an aging Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic rumoured with a move away from Old Trafford, Ferguson could be looking to build a long term partnership between Shawcross and Jonny Evans, who both came through United’s youth academy.
However Chelsea may prove to be the fiercest competitors to United for Shawcross’ signature, as the Blues ponder the long term future of John Terry at the club.
