Having already seen seven players leave Bramall Lane this summer, Sheffield United may now have a fight on their hands to prevent George Baldock from moving on to pastures new.
Despite turning down a reported £3m bid for the defender from Celtic last month (via Football Insider), the Scottish Premiership side could be about to re-ignite their interest.
According to Football Insider, the reigning Scottish Premiership champions are looking to bring Baldock in alongside another full-back as they look to solve their current issues at right-back.
With Mikael Lustig departing from Celtic in June after almost eight years in Glasgow (via BBC Sport), Neil Lennon has yet to bring in a replacement for the 32-year-old.
Signed for £666k (via Transfermarkt) in 2017 from Milton Keynes Dons, Baldock has since gone on to establish himself as a regular for United, starting 27 games for the club during their promotion-winning 2018/19 campaign (via WhoScored).
A key component in Wilder’s preferred 3-5-2 formation (via Transfermarkt), the 26-year-old provided fantastic cover defensively, helping the Blades record a league-high total of 21 clean sheets (via Soccer Stats).
Also capable of carrying a sustained threat going forward having produced three direct goal contributions last season (via WhoScored), Baldock would be missed if he does leave.
Therefore, Wilder must resist the temptation to sell as doing so will almost certainly leave United needing to bring in a new defender as they currently only have one other senior right-back at their disposal (Kieron Freeman), as per Transfermarkt, for the upcoming campaign.
Furthermore, when you consider that there is less than a month left until the current transfer window closes, there is no guarantee that they will be able to secure a worthy successor for Baldock during this limited period of time.
