Sheffield United: Fans can’t believe Jack O’Connell didn’t receive England call-up

Sheffield United fans have been left stunned that centre-back Jack O’Connell was once again overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate.
Is Chris Wilder too harsh on his teams sometimes?
Yes

No

The 25-year-old was not selected in the latest Three Lions squad as they prepare to take on Bulgaria and the Czech Republic in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Blades supporters feel that the defender has been hard done by, given his outstanding performances for the club in recent years.
Indeed, he was a regular as they gained promotion from the Championship last season, starting 41 of their 46 league fixtures and chipping in with three goals and four assists (via Transfermarkt).
He has also been an ever-present so far in their Premier League campaign this year, helping the South Yorkshire outfit to eight points from seven games and two clean sheets.
However, alongside regulars Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez it was Tyrone Mings, Michael Keane and Fikayo Tomori who got the nod from Southgate.
The inclusions of the latter three on that list ahead of O’Connell have baffled Blades fans. They argue that their player outperformed Mings in the Championship last season, and that he has also helped Sheffield United to a more solid start in the Premier League this season than Keane has at Everton.
As for Tomori, they say that he has only been selected because he is playing for a top-six club in Chelsea.
Here are what some Sheffield United fans have had to say following the news that O’Connell had not made the England squad…
Would love for someone to explain to me how Michael Keane and Tyrone Mings get a shot at the England squad over Jack O’Connell… oh yeah it’s a big money move. If JOC went to Everton for £30m he’d be straight in. #sufc #twitterblades

How on earth does Tomori get in the @England squad ahead of Jack O’Connell? He was out of his depth in The Championship for Derby. But now he’s played half a dozen games for Chelsea he’s in the squad. I guess I just answered my own question! #sufc #twitterblades

Me: Jack O’Connell is much better than Fikayo Tomori
Gareth Southgate: Tomori plays for Chelsea
Me: Ahhhhh fair enough then Gaz#SUFC #TwitterBlades #England https://t.co/PfE27i1yMx

So what’s O’Connell and Lunny gotta do to get a call up then? #twitterblades

Instead Tomori who failed to win promotion last season. O’Connell has also out performed Mings in the last 18 months with the best defensive record in the championship last season. Blades have also conceded 7 goals to villas 11 so far this season 🤷🏻♂️
