Sheffield United: Fans loved seeing David McGoldrick score vital goal for Ireland

Sheffield United fans have expressed their love for striker David McGoldrick after he scored his first international goal.

McGoldrick, 31, couldn’t have chosen a much better moment to score his first goal for Ireland. Ireland were 1-0 down at the Aviva Stadium to Switzerland in their Euro Qualifier group, but an 85th-minute equaliser from McGoldrick levelled the scores.

The Sheffield United attacker was playing in his 11th game for Ireland, and helped them stay at the top of their group, having won 11 points in five games – three more than Denmark who sit in second.

The striker has started three games for the Blades this season and came on in one but has failed to score for the club.

It was a great goal from McGoldrick which showed fight and determination. A deflected cross from James McLean saw the ball enter the Switzerland box when McGoldrick leapt above Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji and headed it emphatically into the net.

Unsurprisingly, United fans were delighted to see him open his account for Ireland, with one fan even suggesting it was down to the work of Chris Wilder. Here are some of the best responses below…

Sheffield United fans – what do you think? Should McGoldrick start for Chris Wilder’s team? Let us know in the comments below.
