John Fleck won his first international cap for Scotland on Thursday.
The 28-year-old was in Steve Clarke’s starting line-up against Russia at the Luzhniki Stadium, alongside the likes of Robert Snodgrass, John McGinn and Andy Robertson.
Unfortunately for Fleck, it was not the result he would have wanted on his debut, with the Scots losing 4-0 after four second-half goals which left them unable to qualify for Euro 2020 automatically (via BBC Sport).
However, despite the result, the former Coventry City man will be delighted to have finally gained some international recognition.
It could be argued that it should have come sooner. Indeed, he was a key cog in the Sheffield United team which gained two promotions in three seasons under Chris Wilder, appearing in 146 matches since arriving in 2016, creating 39 assists. But despite being called up by his country two times previously, he never managed to get onto the pitch until now.
His performances for the Blades have continued to be strong in the Premier League, which ultimately led to Clarke finally giving the midfielder an opportunity.
Sheffield United fans know just how good Fleck is having watched him for the last three years. After hearing the news that he was starting for Scotland, many of them rushed to congratulate him, with some also saying that it was long overdue.
Here is what some had to say…
Well done lad 👍⚔️🔴⚪

Been decent for SUFC to be fair so far. At least it’s a bit of interest in the game itself #sufc
