Sheffield United: Fans want John Lundstram to receive England call-up after James Maddison withdraws

James Maddison has been forced to withdraw the England squad ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, leading some Sheffield United fans to call for Gareth Southgate to select John Lundstram to replace him.

Leicester City’s Maddison has been outstanding this season in the Premier League, scoring two and assisting two in seven appearances (via Transfermarkt).

That kind of form, combined with the fact that he created the most chances in the top flight last season, could have seen him win his first cap for England.

But instead he will play no part in the two games due to illness, as the Three Lions look to confirm their place at the European Championships.

Maddison is the second midfielder to pull out after Fabian Delph also withdrew earlier in the week, and some Sheffield United fans want Lundstram to replace the duo in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an excellent start to the season himself. He has become a regular in Chris Wilder’s midfield alongside Oliver Norwood and John Fleck, and has already provided one goal and one assist so far this term (via Transfermarkt).

His all-round performances have certainly impressed the Blades fans, and possibly surprised them too as he was not a regular for them in the Championship last year, making just five league starts.

The former Everton man has played for England at under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20 level though, and after they saw the news that Maddison was out, Sheffield United fans were quick to call for Lundstram to be included in the senior squad…

Sheffield United fans, does Lundstram deserve a call-up? Let us know in the comments below!
