Sheffield United forwards David McGoldrick and Callum Robinson have both been ruled out of playing against Bulgaria in a friendly this week due to injuries.
The duo both started on Thursday versus Switzerland in their Euro 2020 qualification campaign, with David McGoldrick scoring his first international goal to level the scores with just five minutes remaining.
McGoldrick, 31, was sent back to Sheffield to undergo treatment on a shoulder injury and Robinson, 24, was forced off against Switzerland as he picked up a hamstring strain.
According to the BBC, McGoldrick took his injury into Thursday’s match at the Aviva Stadium.
Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy told reporters (BBC): “Both David and Callum won’t be coming back in when the squad report back to the Castleknock Hotel on Sunday.
“David came into camp with a shoulder injury but was determined to play against Switzerland and what a game he had. He was brilliant from start to finish and capped off a great performance with a first senior international goal that was no more than he deserved.
“Callum felt his hamstring in the second half of the game so it is best now that he also goes back to Sheffield United for treatment.
“There are a few other bumps and bruises about the place but we will see how everyone feels after their short break over the weekend and take it from there on Sunday.”
It’s not the news Chris Wilder will want to be hearing, though neither injury sounds like a particularly serious one.
There have been no comments from Sheffield United as to whether the pair will be available for selection versus Southampton on Saturday. The Daily Echo in Southampton has reported that Sheffield United are “sweating over the fitness” of both players, but have not indicated that either player will not be available, leaving it very much up in the air.
Wilder will surely want both available for selection against the Saints at Bramall Lane this weekend as they look to continue their great start to the season.
Callum Robinson has made a good start to life in the Premier League, starting every game and being one of the Blades’ key threats. He scored his first goal for the club in their 2-2 draw away at Chelsea and also averages twice as many shots per game than anyone in the United squad with two. Elsewhere, the attacker also has the highest pass percentage rating for anyone who has started a game with 88.7 per cent, as per WhoScored.
McGoldrick has also played in every match, starting three. McGoldrick has won an impressive 2.3 aerial duels per match, as well as average one shot per game – the joint-second highest in the squad (WhoScored).
Wilder can be happy that the pair have both been sent home and will not have to continue playing for Ireland while slightly injured.
Sheffield United will want to continue their good start to the season by getting at least one point versus Southampton at home on Saturday and losing Callum Robinson could seriously hamper their chances. McGoldrick is probably slightly less important at this stage as it looks like Oli McBurnie may start to play in that position ahead of him, considering that he cost the club £20m and he started ahead of him in their last match.
