When David McGoldrick arrived at Bramall Lane last summer, not even the most optimistic Sheffield United supporter would have predicted just how much of an impact that he would have on their club’s fortunes.
Having been released by Ipswich Town at end of the 2017/18 campaign following a myriad of injury issues which plagued his time in Suffolk, Chris Wilder opted to take a chance on the forward after he had impressed in pre-season.
Although the former Northampton Town boss would not have known it at the time, this particular decision would prove to be a masterstroke.
After making a steady start to his Blades career, McGoldrick began to flourish alongside strike partner Billy Sharp with the fearsome duo putting their side into contention for an automatic promotion place in the Championship with just a handful of games left to play.
However, when Sharp suffered a hamstring injury against Millwall on April 13th, it was looking very bleak for United and their hopes of securing a top-two finish as they were in need of a hero to fill the void left by their top-scorer.
Luckily for Wilder, he was able to call upon McGoldrick who stepped up to the mark impeccably by providing an assist in a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest and then backing it up by scoring a superb brace at the KCOM to help his side defeat Hull City.
Although the Republic of Ireland international didn’t add to his tally of 15 goals for the campaign against Ipswich on Saturday, his outstanding contributions throughout the year saw him win the Blades’ Player of the Season award last night.
After the news was announced on Twitter that McGoldrick had been given the award, these United fans reacted by congratulating the 31-year-old.

With promotion to the Premier League now mathematically secured following Leeds’ 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, the Blades will be aiming to usurp Norwich City at the top of the Championship standings next Sunday when they face Stoke City.
