Sheffield United’s capitulation in their away draw against Aston Villa in February must have been incredibly concerning for the club’s supporters.
Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is valued at £2.25 million (by Transfermarkt), suffered an awful 12 minute display which saw him concede three goals as the Blades threw away two points. For many players, committing these errors would have landed an irreparable dent in their confidence going into the following fixtures. However, this was simply not the case for Manchester United loanee who has bounced back in phenomenal style, keeping seven clean sheets on the bounce in the Championship.
Henderson’s mentality to pick himself up off of the canvas to lead his side to what has arguably been their best run of results of the season has, albeit inadvertently, created an ultimatum for his manager Chris Wilder.
The former Northampton Town boss knows that he has a talented player at his disposal at Bramall Lane and therefore he must do everything possible to keep him there next season. With the Blades currently second in the league standings and just eight games away from a possible return to the Premier League, Wilder is within touching distance of leading his boyhood club back to the big time.
Top flight football next season would undoubtedly improve the club’s chances of convincing Henderson to make a permanent move to Yorkshire yet even if they somehow miss out on this in May, they should still make a move. The England under-21 international has the talent to go on to achieve an illustrious career yet by staying with the Red Devils, he is unlikely to displace David De Gea and so a move away would be good for his development.
Under the guidance of Wilder and his assistant Alan Knill, Henderson has already improved as a goalkeeper this season and so by extending his stay beyond the summer, he could be making the best decision of his career to date.
What do you think Blades fans? Should Wilder do all that he can to secure a permanent deal for Henderson? Or is there another goalkeeper that you would like to see join the club? Get in touch below.
