Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says that there is a chance that John Egan will be fit to face Manchester United on Sunday, but they will leave it until the last minute to make a decision (via @SheffieldUnited).
The Blades manager went on to confirm that if the defender doesn’t make it then Phil Jagielka will be given the opportunity to start the game.
Egan was substituted at half-time in the Republic of Ireland’s game against Denmark on Tuesday with a calf injury (@RTEsoccer).
He has been an ever-present for the Blades so far this season, starting each of their first 12 fixtures in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
So naturally, there was some concern amongst those connected with the club after seeing the Irishman substituted with an injury whilst on international duty.
However, speaking in Sheffield United’s pre-match press conference ahead of their fixture against Manchester United, Wilder was fairly positive about Egan’s chances of being involved against the Red Devils.
When asked whether the centre-back could feature, Wilder said: “Yeah he has a chance – we’re going to leave it to the last minute,” (via @SheffieldUnited).
The ex-Oxford manager also added that if Egan didn’t make it then Jagielka will start in his absence, insisting that his “experience in big games” could be a major help to them (@SheffieldUnited).
If Egan doesn’t make it then there is no doubt that it would be a big blow for the Blades considering that he has been a key figure in their defence this season.
The team has conceded just nine goals this season (BBC Sport), the second-fewest in the division and the Irish international is a major reason for that excellent record so they will hope that he makes it.
However, it would provide a window of opportunity for Jagielka to come in and stake his claim for more minutes in the team.
Since returning to Bramall Lane from Everton in the summer the ex-England international has made just three substitute appearances in the league, with his only starts coming in the EFL Cup (Transfermarkt).
If he can come in and produce a solid display then it would certainly give Wilder something to think about heading into the busy Christmas period.
