Sheffield United continue to be interested in signing Club Brugge forward Emmanuel Dennis in the upcoming transfer window, but according to a report from Voetbalkrant (via YorkshireLive) they could face competition for his signature.
Indeed the Belgian outlet is suggesting that the Blades’ Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also keen on signing the 22-year-old.
There were reports of Chris Wilder’s interest in the Nigerian international back in February, when HLN suggested that they could do battle with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund to get him.
Then in March Dutch news publication Het Laatste Nieuws claimed that the South Yorkshire outfit would be willing to go back in for the player in the summer window having previously attempted to sign him in the off-season last year, only to be rebuffed (via YorkshireLive).
It now seems that they could be rivalled by Steve Bruce’s side as well, with Voetbalkrant claiming that there is ‘concrete’ interest from the Magpies. Added to that, it also references reports in Nigeria which suggest that a move to Tyneside is possible.
One thing is for sure, whoever does end up signing Dennis would be getting an extremely exciting talent. Indeed, this season he has been fantastic for Club Brugge and has netted nine goals in all competitions, whilst also providing two assists (Transfermarkt).
He played a starring role for the Belgian team in their 2-2 draw against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu back in October, bagging both goals on the night and thus highlighting that he is more than capable of performing against the best teams in Europe (BBC Sport).
He is currently valued at £15.3 million by Transfermarkt, an amount which would fit nicely with the transfer structure of both Sheffield United and Newcastle. However, for the good of his career he may be better off joining the Blades, given that the Magpies have been accused of playing negative and defensive football at times this term (The Guardian) which could lead to him struggling to express himself at St James’ Park.
Indeed, he need only look at their £40m (BBC Sport) summer signing Joelinton, who has managed to score just once in 29 Premier League appearances in that team (Transfermarkt). Dennis may find that he would thrive more under Wilder who plays a much more adventurous style which includes overlapping centre-backs (medium.com).
