Sheffield United look set to be without striker David McGoldrick for their Premier League fixture against Liverpool on Saturday.
The Republic of Ireland striker has missed both the Blades’ 2-0 win against Everton and their Carabao Cup defeat against Sunderland with a groin problem, and it looks unlikely that he will be ready to return when the European champions arrive at Bramall Lane.
Speaking ahead of the game, manager Chris Wilder confirmed that the former Ipswich player was the only doubt for the fixture. He said: “Everyone is fine apart from David McGoldrick, he’s very, very doubtful for this weekend’s game.”
His absence will be a big blow to the Blades, who are looking to build on their impressive start to life back in the Premier League having already picked up eight points from six games.
The 31-year-old has been a key player for the South Yorkshire side since arriving on a free transfer back in the summer of 2018.
In his first year with the club, McGoldrick scored 15 goals and created four assists as he helped Sheffield United to automatic promotion from the Championship. He was also named as the official club Player of the Year.
Whilst he hasn’t scored yet this season, the Irishman has been a regular in Wilder’s team and had started in four of their five league matches prior to missing last week’s visit to Goodison Park.
In his absence, Lys Mousset, Callum Robinson and Oliver McBurnie will be fighting it out for the two starting places up front for the Blades as Billy Sharp continues to serve a suspension for his red card against Southampton.
Mousset could stake a claim for a start after scoring at Everton last weekend, as McGoldrick looks set to miss out against the league leaders.
