Sheffield United: Dean Henderson reveals he almost joined Leeds before Bramall Lane move

Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has revealed that he was close to joining Leeds United on loan in the summer of 2018 (via sufc.co.uk).

He has also admitted that joining Bristol City was also an option before ultimately signing for Chris Wilder’s side.

Having just completed a successful season on loan with Shrewsbury Town in 2017/18, Henderson has revealed that most clubs in the Championship were chasing his signature (sufc.co.uk).

One of those were Leeds United and, speaking to Sheffield United’s official website, the 23-year-old shot-stopper has revealed how close he was to a move to Elland Road.

“I’d been down to Leeds, and it looked as though I was signing there,” said Henderson.

However, the Blades were also interested in signing the young goalkeeper, and once he learned of their interest he immediately knew that Bramall Lane was the place he wanted to be.

“My agent rang me and said that Sheffield United had been on the back burner. I said to him ‘Why haven’t you told me?’, because I really wanted to go there.

“The gaffer rang me, we spoke on the phone for an hour, and to be honest I was walking there before I even put the phone down. I was just buzzing to come to Bramall Lane.”

Henderson claims that joining Sheffield United was the “best decision” of his career so far (sufc.co.uk).

It is hard to disagree with that when you look at the success both he and the club have had since his arrival.

The 23-year-old was instrumental in the Blades’ promotion from the Championship last season, keeping 21 clean sheets as they finished in second place (sufc.co.uk).

He is now getting an opportunity to play Premier League football at Bramall Lane, which ultimately led to his first England call-up in October 2019 (BBC Sport).

Henderson still has hopes of one day becoming Manchester United’s first choice goalkeeper (sufc.co.uk), but if that doesn’t happen it would appear that he has found an alternative home in South Yorkshire.
