What an incredible year it has been to be a Sheffield United supporter.
Having missed out on a play-off position in the 2017/18 campaign, not many would have predicted just how good the Blades would turn out to be this season under Chris Wilder.
With the additions of John Egan, Oliver Norwood and David McGoldrick bolstering United’s squad, the club launched a sustained push for promotion at the turn of the year which saw them fight it out with Leeds for the top-two.
Despite falling three points behind their rivals in April, a run of three consecutive victories allowed the Blades to land the decisive blow as they guaranteed a return to the Premier League following the Whites’ 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
Although Billy Sharp grabbed all the headlines during the season by firing in 23 goals, it could be argued that without the presence of Enda Stevens at wing-back, United may not have been able to overcome the challenge provided by Leeds.
Signed on a free transfer from Portsmouth in 2017 (via Transfermarkt), the Republic of Ireland international has improved immeasurably since moving to Bramall Lane both in a defensive sense as well as going forward.
An outstanding talent, the 28-year-old has all the ingredients that are required to be a success in the top-flight and could prove to be the all-important distance for the Blades as they look to establish themselves amongst England’s biggest clubs.
With Wilder expected to bolster his squad in the summer, he should consider building it around Stevens rather than Sharp.
Whereas the forward is approaching the twilight of what has been a hugely successful career, his team-mate is entering his prime and will undoubtedly be an incredibly important player next season.
What do you think Blades fans? How impressed have you been with Stevens since he joined your club in 2017? Could you have achieved promotion without the defender? Let us know below.
