Sheffield United are interested in signing former Manchester City and Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell, that is according to a report from the Sheffield Star.
Should Sheffield United sign Jack Rodwell?
The 28-year-old is currently looking for a new club after being released by Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season.
He was recently linked with a move to Serie A giants Roma (The Guardian), but that move never went through. It has also been reported that the midfielder has held talks with Roma’s fellow Italian club Parma (Daily Mail).
However, it is now being reported that Chris Wilder’s side are weighing up making a move for the England international.
Wilder is known for sometimes taking a punt on players that are not fancied elsewhere. Indeed in 2018 he took free agent David McGoldrick on trial before offering him a contract, he went on to score 15 goals in his first season at Bramall Lane (Transfermarkt).
He also brought in former Manchester United man Ravel Morrison in the summer, so it is not ridiculous to think that he may consider giving Rodwell the opportunity to revive his career in England.
Naturally there is some scepticism about potentially signing Rodwell from Sheffield United’s supporters, given that he has gone from costing Manchester City £12 million (BBC Sport) to now being a free agent, and you only need to look at what Sunderland fans think of him to see it would be quite a surprise for him to jump back to the top-flight.
But most seem happy to trust Wilder after seeing the work he has done with other players whose careers were stalling in the past…
Whatever Wilder wants is good enough for me.

If wilder wants him, who are we to argue with him. #wilderisgodpassiton.

After seeing what he has done with Lundstram, I’d back CW to turn a a sfubbed out cigarette into a Welsh international football player!

If Sir Chris says yes then fair enough.

Wilder can turn anyone around. In Chris we trust.

Wilder has done enough to win our trust, but never been a fan of Rodwell personally

I’ll go with anything CW thinks is right. To me isn’t a fit….but
