The Republic of Ireland were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Georgia in Tbilisi on Saturday.
It was a huge opportunity for Mick McCarthy’s side, who are looking to qualify for Euro 2020. Their main rivals in their group are Denmark, and they had only managed to draw in Georgia so the Irish knew that a win would put them in pole position.
But they could only manage to equal the Danes’ result, meaning that their next two matches against Switzerland and Denmark themselves are now crucial.
Going forward there weren’t many positives but one good thing that did come out of the match was the performance of centre-back John Egan.
The Sheffield United defender was taking advantage of Richard Keogh’s long-term injury by replacing him at the heart of the backline alongside Shane Duffy, and put in an assured performance which saw him named as Man of the Match.
It was only Egan’s sixth appearance for his country, but he certainly brought his club form to the table as he ensured that the Republic of Ireland kept a clean sheet away from home.
After seeing that he had been awarded Man of the Match, many Sheffield United fans were quick to congratulate him. But they were also not surprised that the 26-year-old was performing well at international level…
That’s what happens when you play him Mick!!!! @JohnEgan92 is an absolute class act, well done squire 👏👏👏👏👏
