Sheffield United: Fans unhappy with Mo Besic’s Man of the Match award - Sheffield United

Sheffield United endured a disappointing night in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, ultimately going out of the competition.

The Blades were beaten 1-0 at Bramall Lane by League One outfit Sunderland, with an early goal from Max Power sealing the Black Cats’ passage through to the round of 16.

Chris Wilder had made 10 changes going into the game, offering some of his fringe players the opportunity to impress and to try and force their way into his plans for their Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday.

The likes of Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison and Ben Osborn were amongst those getting just a second start of the campaign. However most, if not all, of the players who turned out for the South Yorkshire club failed to seize their opportunity given the result.

The one player who was singled out for a bit of praise from his manager was Muhamed Besic, with Wilder telling journalist Alan Biggs after the game that “no players other than Besic” took their chance to impress.

The Bosnian was also awarded the club’s official Man of the Match award as voted for by supporters. Still, despite being voted for by the fans, the announcement of the Everton loanee as the best player on the pitch for the Blades was met with criticism by some of the Blades faithful.
