Sheffield United suffered a first league defeat since September (Transfermarkt) on Thursday night as they went down 2-0 to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United.
The Blades dominated the game in terms of the statistics, finishing with 73.4% of possession, taking 13 shots to Newcastle’s six and having eight corners to one (via WhoScored).
However, the Magpies came out on top in the only stat that matters and picked up all three points which took them level on points with Chris Wilder’s side in the table (BBC Sport).
Wilder decided to shuffle his pack slightly for the game, dropping strikers Lys Mousset and David McGoldrick to the bench and starting with Billy Sharp and Oliver McBurnie.
It was a huge call given the form of the former pair, with Mousset in particular having been in great form with four goals and three assists in six games prior to the game against Newcastle (Transfermarkt).
The experiment didn’t work as the Blades failed to score on the night. Sharp failed to get a single shot on target in the game, whilst McBurnie was dispossessed once and had one unsuccessful touch as he finished with a match rating of just 6.23 (via WhoScored).
Many of their supporters took to Twitter after the game to call for both Mousset and McGoldrick to be put back in the team.
In fact, plenty suggested that not only should they be in the team for their game against Norwich, but they should also start whenever they are available…
Can’t afford too many more performances like that against teams who are chasing us. Also Mcgoldrick and Mousset need to start every game
