The good times are well and truly back at Bramall Lane aren’t they Sheffield United fans?
Following Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town, the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League was mathematically confirmed by Leeds United’s dramatic 1-1 draw with Aston Villa yesterday as the gap between the two sides moved to four points with just one game left to play this season.
Although it would be understandable if Chris Wilder continues his partying throughout the week after taking his boyhood club back to the big time, the former Oxford United manager will know that in order to compete in the top flight, he will have to start his summer recruitment almost immediately.
With an increase in transfer funds almost certain to be on the agenda over the coming weeks, it is imperative that the Blades do not repeat the mistakes made by the likes of Huddersfield Town and Fulham.
Whereas the Terriers’ owner Dean Hoyle did not invest enough money following promotion, Shahid Khan decision to splash out £105.3m (via Sky Sports) on a whole host of players backfired massively as both clubs were relegated to the Championship earlier this year.
For United to have the best chance to establish themselves as a Premier League side over the coming years, they must spend wisely but also place their trust in one particular system. It is of no surprise whatsoever that the club’s achievements over the past three years has coincided with the decision to move to a 3-5-2 formation and so they must sign players who will suit Wilder’s style of play.
Although spending £30m on one player may force the rest of the top-flight to take notice, it is important that the Blades focus directly on bringing in quality individuals rather than going all-out to secure a marquee purchase.
What do you think United fans? Who do you want Wilder to bring in in the summer? How much money does he need to spend in order to build a side who can compete in the Premier League? Let us know below.
