There are injury fears around Sheffield United defender John Egan after he was substituted at half-time in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 draw against Denmark on Monday (@RTESoccer).
The 27-year-old had started the game at the Aviva Stadium but was replaced by Ciaran Clark.
As mentioned, Egan was withdrawn at half-time, and there was initially some confusion over why he had been taken off.
Some thought that it may be due to concussion, as the defender had clashed heads with Danish striker Andreas Cornelius.
However, journalist Ben Dinnery is now reporting that the former Brentford man was actually substituted due to a calf injury.
It is unknown whether it was just precautionary or if there is a genuine problem, and therefore his participation in Sheffield United’s Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Sunday could be in doubt.
The only slight positive is that if it is a calf problem, then he does at least have a chance of being available for the game against the Red Devils. Had it been a concussion he could have been automatically ruled out due to the concussion protocol.
If there is an injury for Egan which will rule him out of action, then there is no doubt that it is a major blow for the Blades.
The Irishman has been a first team regular for Sheffield United this season and has started all 12 of their Premier League matches so far (Transfermarkt).
He has been part of a defence which has already kept five clean sheets and conceded just nine goals this term, but Chris Wilder may be forced to shuffle his pack.
Phil Jagielka would be the obvious choice to replace Egan. The ex-England international has plenty of top-flight experience having played 385 games for Everton (Transfermarkt), and he has been on the bench for 10 fixtures (Transfermarkt).
Richard Stearman is another option; he was Egan’s back-up in the Championship last season, but he appears to have fallen behind Jagielka in the pecking order and has only been on the bench once in the league all season (Transfermarkt).
Sheffield United fans, who would you choose to replace John Egan in the starting line-up if injury does sideline him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
