Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck has been reminiscing about his decision to join the South Yorkshire club back in 2016 in an interview with the Daily Record.
The 28-year-old moved to Bramall Lane from Coventry City, and has enjoyed the best form of his career whilst with the Blades.
In the summer of 2016, Fleck’s contract at Coventry City had expired and he has a huge decision to make about his future.
He was set to turn 25 in August of that year and with his peak years on the horizon, it was vital that he chose the right club to move to.
The Scotsman has admitted that he had a number of options that summer (Daily Record), but after travelling to Bramall Lane he knew straight away that was where he wanted to play his football.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Fleck said: “Sheffield United were always in my mind. I had the chance to go there when I left Rangers (in 2012) but the move fell through.
“The first time I met the manager at the ground, I walked out on to the pitch, just me and my agent. And when I walked off, I had this feeling that I can’t really explain.
“I just knew in my gut that I wanted to sign there. So I decided straight away that it was the club for me and signed the next day.
“I just knew it was a big club, a stadium with a terrific atmosphere. And I knew they had good players having already played them.
“So I felt if it went in the right direction, who knows what could happen. It’s been unbelievable what’s happened since.”
Looking at his time with Sheffield United over three years later, the decision Fleck made certainly looks like the correct one.
He has been a key player in the Blades’ rise from League One to the Premier League and has made 150 appearances for them overall, scoring nine goals and providing 39 assists (Transfermarkt).
The midfielder has continued to be a regular in Chris Wilder’s side in the top flight, starting 10 of their 12 matches so far and he recently netted his first goal of the season against Burnley (Transfermarkt).
Fleck is now firmly establishing himself, not only as a Premier League player but also as a Scottish international having won his first cap in October (Sheffield Star).
When he finishes his career, he is likely to look back on his choice to sign for Sheffield United with the belief that it was the best move he made in his career.
