What a difference a few days make in the world of football.
On April 13th, it looked as if Leeds United were destined to secure a top-two spot in the Championship as Sheffield United conceded a gut-wrenching last-minute equaliser at Bramall Lane against Millwall. The set-back was compounded by the fact that Billy Sharp had suffered a hamstring injury that would rule him out of the Easter weekend fixtures.
In absence of the club’s top-scorer, Chris Wilder needed his other forwards to step up to the mark which is exactly what David McGoldrick did. After setting up Enda Stevens for the game-clinching goal against Nottingham Forest on Friday, the Republic of Ireland produced arguably his best display in a Blades shirt yesterday against Hull City.
Knowing that a win could see his side move three points clear of Leeds in the league standings, McGoldrick put on a one-man show at the KCOM Stadium as fired in a superb header before curling in a stupendous effort from 25-yards to give his side a two-goal lead over the Tigers. Stevens then added a third to cap off a tremendous first-half performance from United as they eased to a vital victory which could be the result which secures promotion this season.
Leeds’ defeat at Brentford means that the Blades can go up next week if they better the result of their rivals.
Wilder’s side face Ipswich Town next week in a clash that will be of great importance on a personal note to McGoldrick who was released by the Tractor Boys last summer following his continuous struggles with injuries. With his career hanging in the balance, the 31-year-old was given a chance to prove himself by United and has repaid their trust by firing in 15 goals this season.
In a contrast of fortunes, Ipswich have been relegated to League One this year in the absence of McGoldrick whilst the forward has provided the all-important difference needed for the Blades to sustain their fight for a top-two finish this year.
