Sheffield United are having a season to remember in the Championship, aren’t they Blades fans?
Chris Wilder’s side continued their stunning form last week as they defeated Leeds United on their travels to move up to second in the league standings. With a real chance of Premier League football next season, the Blades will have to make some tough decisions in regards to who they offer new contracts and who they let go.
One player who is in this position is Conor Washington. Signed on a short-term deal from Queens Park Rangers in August, the Northern Irish forward has struggled to adapt to life at Bramall Lane with his previous career escapades all-but evading him in Sheffield.
A failure to establish himself as a serious competitor for the in-form pairing of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick, Washington has been limited to just eighteen Championship appearances and just four starts this season. Despite playing in a side who have been championed for their attacking football, the 26-year-old has remarkably failed to score a single goal, illustrating that for his sake he needs to move on from United at the end of the season.
In what had been seen as a risk worth taking in the summer for Wilder has ultimately failed, leaving the former Oxford United boss with no other choice than to release Washington in the summer regardless of whether the Blades find themselves in the Premier League or the Championship for the 2019/20 campaign.
The money freed up by letting the former QPR striker leave could allow United to either draft in a proven replacement or offer a new contract to one of their star performers.
What do you think Blades fans? Is it time to give up on Washington? Or should the club keep the forward ahead of next season? Get in touch below.
