Shirt number change fuels Manchester United speculation

ronaldo.jpgThe Daily Mail have not only got Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern excited, but all the fans are looking up with interest on their faces.

The publication claim that the iconic number 7 shirt has been left untouched this season at Old Trafford, with Antonio Valencia surrendering the shirt in favour of his former number 25 – making the rumours over a potential return for Cristiano Ronaldo even louder, both in Spain and in England.

Of course we have been considering the return of the Portuguese star for some time and what a signing for David Moyes that would be – certainly something that would blow any Jose Mourinho comment or signing out of the water.

Given Real Madrid’s pursuit of Gareth Bale, selling Ronaldo is not the unthinkable decision it may once have been for Florentino Perez.

Whilst Carlo Ancelotti would ideally love to keep the player, he knows that Ronaldo still has to sign the new contract he has been offered, which would see him earn nearly a million more euros than Lionel Messi per season.

Ronaldo himself has made no secret of his love for United and even though Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer in charge at the club, he would play a role in convincing the forward to return – and having his favourite shirt available would go a long way to completing any potential deal.

Is there anything concrete in Valencia surrendering the number 7 shirt or is it all merely speculation? Let us know your thoughts below.
