Chelsea fans here have been left baffled here in the Transfer Tavern by the news from the Guardian, as the publication reports the decision of their manager to not include new signing Papy Djilobodji in their Champions League squad until the New Year – with many of them fearing it has left them short of options at the back.
The defence was one area in particular Chelsea had clearly highlighted as needing additions. With Jose Mourinho’s high profile pursuit of a defender having been well documented this summer, with them having three bids rejected for Everton’s John Stones, as well as two bids for Paris Saint Germain’s Marquinhos rejected on deadline day.
However with the transfer window drawing to a close it was fairly unknown defenders Papy Djilobodji of Nantes and Micheal Hector from Reading that were brought in, with Hector being immediately loaned back to Reading for a season.
With a defender clearly such a priority for Mourinho it is then clearly a shock that the only one brought in over the summer has been excluded from the squad.
A decision which has left them with only six recognised defenders, and one our landlord thinks Chelsea football club may live to regret!
