According to the Daily Mirror, West Ham are interested in bringing Dimitri Payet back to the London Stadium this summer.

The 31-year-old only left the Hammers 2 years ago when he forced a move to French giants, and his own previous club, Marseille.

Payet, once a hero amongst the West Ham faithful, left the club in far from harmonious circumstances. So a return to the East London side would be a huge surprise.

Whilst Marseille appear open to a sale though, a return to the Premier League for the Frenchman shouldn’t be ruled out, and plenty of top English clubs ought to be keeping tabs on the situation.

The Breakdown

Chelsea should be exploring the option of bringing Payet to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues’ transfer window is yet to really get going amidst confusion surrounding the current manager’s status and the anticipated arrival of Maurizio Sarri to the hot seat. Chelsea need to get moving quickly though in order to get any new arrivals well settled at the club ahead of the new campaign.

The capture of Payet would be a great start to the club’s summer business and would bring a lot to this Chelsea side. With Pedro and Danny Drinkwater failing to impress last season, Fabregas ageing, and Ross Barkley looking a long way from being first choice, the burden of creativity has fallen squarely on Hazard and Willian.

Payet, a player certainly of Champions League quality, would help share out the creative load and add another goal threat to this Chelsea team. His ability in dead ball situations would also bring a new dimension to the Blues’ set piece repertoire.

Transfermarkt value the France international at £19.8 million. A figure Chelsea could afford, and if they’re able to move on a few of their underperforming stars in this window then there’d be room enough in the squad for the Marseille man.
