It goes without saying that Liverpool have come a long way since the days of Djimi Traore.
Virgil van Dijk, one of the best players to have graced the Premier League. Joe Gomez, a man with immeasurable amounts of potential. Joel Matip, Liverpool’s most welcome surprise package. Dejan Lovren…self-proclaimed ‘one of the best defenders in the world’.
All of the above have their qualities, yet all have failed to secure any silverware with the Reds. And all, it pains us to say, sit in the wake of former flop Djimi Traore – in terms of trophies anyway. Blimey.
Signed from Stade Laval for an estimated £720k in 1999, Malian international defender Traore spent seven painful seasons at Anfield during which time he somehow won the League Cup, the FA Cup and, wait for it…the Champions League. Yes – that’s right, Djimi Traore at the peak of the European game. Ah, goodness me. What on earth can we even say about that?
It genuinely seems so unbelievable because he was such a terrible player. It was a health risk for Liverpool fans watching the unpredictable fool stumble his way around Anfield, it really was. High blood pressure, stress, tears, sweats, vomiting, diarrhoea – the lot. He should’ve come with his own label, or the club should’ve at least stuck something in the pre-match programmes. It’s only fair; think of the children! Unfortunately, that never happened, and the unsuspecting paying fans of Liverpool were delivered such wonderful memories as this…
Just look at that. How did he even manage it? It’s mind-boggling stuff. At no point did Traore even look like he was going to do anything other than score an own goal. Like space and time, it raises so many questions; how weren’t the anti-gambling bodies on red alert following the goal? Was he honestly that bad that they didn’t even bother to scrutinise him? Why was he a Liverpool player? How did he win so many trophies?
The answers to all those riddles don’t yet know. But one thing we are sure of, he was absolutely shocking.
Liverpool fans, where do you rank Traore as one of your worst ever players? Was there anyone worse than him? Let us know in the comments below!
