What a cataclysmic flop Radamel Falcao was.
It would’ve been poetic, wouldn’t it? A complete and utter failure at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in world football, turned good at a Premier League rival to become a dominant force in English football. It was a comeback story waiting to happen.
Indeed, for reasons unbeknown to us now, we genuinely felt like Chelsea was going to be Falcao’s redemption story. Like the predatory punter who scouts fruit machines and knows exactly when to pop in the pound coin, Chelsea could have reaped the rewards of one of the greatest comeback stories in modern football (sort of, not really).
Despite impressing in a pre-season game against Barcelona (wow), there really wasn’t much to write home about when it came to Falcao and his Stamford Bridge experience. Once one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, the fallen finishing phenomenon managed just one goal in 12 games at Chelsea, and that came in a game against Crystal Palace which the Blues lost 2-1.
In a financial tragedy we can only really relate to the astronomical fees which accompany the sneaky Mars bar or a tiny bottle of wine in your hotel mini-fridge, Radamel Falcao left Stamford Bridge with some pretty hefty fees (as calculated by Telegraph).
For example, it cost Chelsea a cool £32,000 per minute for every time he appeared. Each of his shots, which only resulted in a goal once bear in mind, were worth £809,000 and every effort on target £1.46million. And best yet, every touch he made worked out at £57,000 a go, while each pass cost £116,000. Ah, you’ve got to laugh.
Needless to say, Falcao was one of Chelsea’s worst signings since Abramovich pumped his dirty oil money into the club.
Chelsea fans, just how awful was Falcao? Are you surprised to see how much he set you back? Let us know in the comments below!
