Victor Valdes, the three-time Champions League winner with six domestic titles and two Copa Del Rey’s to his name as a Barcelona player, turned unequivocal flop by Manchester United.
The day Manchester United’s fax machine “broke” – with a little help from Dazza from maintenance (unconfirmed) – was the day two Spaniards had their dreams and future ambitions smashed into tiny little pieces. David De Gea denied of his “Galactico” transfer while Victor Valdes, the man chosen to replace him, was deprived on pretty much everything, other than a comfortable spot on the Old Trafford bench.
Now, we tend to freely slander players when it comes to our “Shocker” pieces, and for the most part, they deserve it. But to do that in this instance almost feels cruel, like kicking a man when he’s down. Thing is, it’s not even like he was a particularly bad player, either.
Quite the opposite in fact.
From the sunny cities of Spain to the frankly miserable depths of Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the former Barcelona man took to his new Premier League environment like a duck to water. Indeed, Valdes’ debut game against the Tigers, in which he made some pretty sterling saves, at least filled the mourning Manchester United faithful with some hope that there was a bright future away from el Gato, De Gea.
For better or worse though, his efforts were quickly made redundant when De Gea’s high-profile move to Madrid fell through.
A broken figure with more snubs in Louis van Gaal’s direction than appearances made for the club – although that isn’t saying much – Valdes departed North West England in January 2016 on loan to Belgium side Standard Liege before joining Middlesbrough later the same year.
We dare say that, if you told the Spaniard that he would have gone from playing with Lionel Messi to watching Stuart Downing amble up and down the wing with the space of a few years, then he probably would’ve retired when he had the chance in 2015.
