Liverpool were a little bit lost without Luis Suarez but signing Roberto Firmino in 2015 helped them find their feet again and boy are they enjoying his presence now.
Liverpool’s forward unit is like a well-constructed clock, each component working in tandem to ensure full functionality. Roberto Firmino, if he were a part of a clock, would be the central mechanism – the very thing that keeps it ticking.
For all his greatness now, Liverpool fans have Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim to thank for refining his raw talent. After years of chipping away and buffering the rough edges of his game, the Brazilian made his breakthrough during the 2013/14 campaign. “I have the feeling this season that I have come into it right,” he predicted right after delivering a five-goal hammer blow to Hamburg. I feel more comfortable than in a long time, I feel liberated.”
One season and a couple of cheeky no-look goals later, Firmino booked himself a one-way ticket to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp, a man who knows a bit about Bundesliga football, the highest bidder. And his services were desperately needed.
In the year following Luis Suarez’s exit, Liverpool looked desperately short of options and answers. They ambled their way through gamedays with the utter drivel that was Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge. It speaks volumes that Steven Gerrard, a more defensively minded midfielder at that stage in his career, was the top goal scorer (9).
To clean up the cataclysmic mess that lay before them, it cost Liverpool £29million to secure Firmino’s services, which is pennies by today’s standards, and he quickly set about his job with ten league goals and eight assists in his first season.
While his stats in the proceeding years have been extremely impressive, he contributes so much to the team than just goals and assists. Firmino’s energy and never say die attitude synchronises perfectly with the general Liverpool ethic instilled by their passion German boss.
