There will not be a single fan Premier League fan out there who has not felt the harsh sting of Sergio Aguero at some point over the past eight years. We are looking at you Manchester United fans.
The former Atletico Madrid man was not a particularly well-know talent when he was rising through the ranks of one of the most prestigious producers of lethal forwards in the modern game, but their reputation was enough to get fans jiving to the sound of an incoming Premier League trophy.
“I think we are a team that in future will be fighting every year to win major trophies,” he told City’s official website following his reported £38 million move from the Spanish capital (via BBC Sport).
“When we were talking I asked my agents to do everything they could because this was a good club and I’d always wanted to play in the Premier League. It felt right.”
We would love to pick apart his statement and brand it generic crowd-pleasing drivel. You know, the kind every player spindles when they see the big bucks and shift their allegiances to a club they know very little about (after, all we doubt he was tuning in to watch Darius Vassell zipping around the forward line). But we would only be saying that through bitterness. In truth, Aguero has been a huge success at Manchester City and is one of the few remaining “original” signings of the Sheikh Mansour-era.
Indeed, where we once considered the move to Manchester to be motivated purely by money, we know recognise that Aguero’s romance with the club is far more deep-rooted than that. Just four years ago, for example, the forward pledged his long-term allegiance to City claiming he would not leave until they had won a Champions League (as per Telegraph). Which, prior to Pep Guardiola’s arrival, was essentially a lifelong vow.
There is one word that sums up this man’s career in England and it is this: “Aguerooooooooooooooooo”.
There are genuinely very few single words in the world that tell a story worth one million more, but that particularly extract of Martin Tyler’s iconic transcript does it ten times over.
Aguero gifted us the greatest moment in Premier League history back in 2012, and for that he will forever go down as one of the most iconic players to ever grace the competition.
