Liverpool supporters have been somewhat deflated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team lose at the fourth round stage of the FA Cup for the third successive season courtesy of a 3-2 defeat at home to West Brom on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men succumbed to West Ham and Wolves at the round of 32 in the last two years but would have been hoping for a cup run this season, especially as it represented arguably their only realistic chance of silverware. Yet the Reds bowed out of the world’s oldest club competition on Saturday as a Jay Rodriguez brace and a Joel Matip own goal were enough to seal a deserved win for Alan Pardew’s Baggies, who had to come from behind following Roberto Firmino’s opener as well as weather the storm late on given Mohamed Salah’s effort in the 78th minute.
Consequently, there have been many disappointed Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to improve given a recent report from RMC Sport, which details comments from Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev regarding the immediate future of reported Reds target Thomas Lemar.
The 22-year-old forward played a key part in the club’s incredible success last season with 14 goals and 17 assists in all competitions, helping fire Leonardo Jardim’s to the Ligue 1 title and indeed to the last four of the Champions League.
And while things haven’t gone as well this term, both for the club and indeed Lemar himself, the France international has been subject of interest for a while, with Liverpool reportedly keen on the talented forward for some time now.
However, Monaco vice president Vasilyev has dealt Klopp’s side a significant setback by confirming that Lemar will remain at the club until the end of the season.
And that news is sure to come as a huge blow to Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy, especially given that influential ace Philippe Coutinho left the club earlier this month, with it now pretty much certain that they won’t be able to pull off a huge January deal to land Lemar.
Landlord’s verdict: Monaco’s Thomas Lemar has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while now, but Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona has since heightened the need for reinforcements at Anfield ahead of the second half of the season.
As such, speculation has been building about a possible move for the 22-year-old this month, yet Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev has all but ended talk of a huge deal taking place in January by simply reiterating that Lemar will be at the club until the end of the season.
And this is sure to come as a significant setback for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, with it looking increasingly likely that the Merseysiders will not bring in a replacement for Coutinho before tomorrow’s deadline.
