Tottenham supporters were reasonably satisfied in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side end a memorable week with a narrow victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley, a result which drew them level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have lost to the Red Devils last weekend but they bounced back in the best way possible by easing past European champions Real Madrid 3-1 in midweek, a result which booked them a place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And although they weren’t at their best against Roy Hodgson’s Eagles on Sunday, they got the all important three points thanks to a fine strike from Son Heung-min midway through the second half.
Thus, several of our resident Tottenham fans have been celebrating a brilliant week for their team, although they may well be stopped in their tracks as a recent report from CalcioMercato details some significant and perhaps frustrating news regarding the chase for Fiorentina midfielder Milan Badelj, a reported Spurs target.
The 28-year-old made the move to the Italian outfit back in 2014 after a short stint at Hamburg, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 123 appearances for the Serie A club, in which time he has scored five goals and laid on nine assists from a defensive midfield position.
And with starts in all but two of their league games so far this term, the Croatia international continues to prove his worth to manager Stefano Polli, and as such he has attracted reported interest from Pochettino’s Tottenham during 2017.
However, Spurs may have suffered a significant blow in their pursuit of Badelj as reports suggest that Italian giants AC Milan have seized the initiative by readying a swap deal for the midfielder, which will reportedly involve Manuel Locatelli.
And with Badelj’s contract up at the end of the campaign, Fiorentina may view this as a good deal, and as such Spurs may well miss out on the 28-year-old in the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Tottenham made key signings in defence and attack over the summer in a bid to bolster their ranks, although they didn’t add to their midfield ranks.
And injuries to Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele already this term has seen those options stretched somewhat, so it’s hardly surprising that they are reportedly interested in Fiorentina’s highly-rated midfield general Milan Badelj.
However, it seems that Mauricio Pochettino’s men now face a battle to land the Croatia international as AC Milan are readying a January move for the 28-year-old, which will reportedly include Manuel Locatelli going the other way.
And with Badelj’s contract up in the summer, and Fiorentina reportedly keen on Locatelli, Spurs may find it tough coming up with a better deal for the midfielder.
